Community Health Centres: Who Are We?
Ontario Community Health Centres (CHCs) are non-profit, community-governed organizations that provide primary health care, health promotion and community development services, using multi-disciplinary teams of health providers. These primary health care teams often include physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, dietitians, health promoters, counsellors and others who are paid by salary rather than through a fee-for-service system.
"More and more provinces that have Nurse Practitioners are realizing their value to the system." - Lisa Little, Health Human Resources Consultant Canadian Nurses Association (CNA)
Your Community Health Centre: Background
Merrickville District Community Health and Services Centre celebrated its 30th anniversary as a community governed, non-profit, health organization in 2004/05. In 1974 the Merrickville Medical Centre was established and in 1984 it became the Merrickville District Community Health Centre, the first rural CHC in the province of Ontario.
In November 2005 the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care announced approval for a Smiths Falls Satellite CHC under the sponsorship of Merrickville District Community Health and Services Centre. In making the announcement, the Honorable George Smitherman says the government is expanding access to community-based primary health care because “CHCs Work”.
