Local Artist Honored For Giving Over Fifty Years of Beauty to Community
Merrickville, May 28th, 2012----Rideau Community Health Services serving Lanark Leeds and Grenville since 1974) honours Pieter Doef, who for over fifty five years has been creating and teaching art in the Smiths Falls and Merrickville areas. Rideau Community Health Services (RCHS) is a community governed health and social service organization operating the Merrickville District and Smiths Falls Community Health Centres, Rideau Valley Diabetes Services and the South East Diabetes Regional Coordination Centre.
Each year at their Annual General Meeting the Board of Directors of RCHS honours one individual for “outstanding contribution to our community”. This year that honour goes to Pieter Doef for his contribution as an artist and teacher over many years. “When we think of what makes an individual and community healthy we know that it is more than our doctors and nurses; it is a clean environment, good food, physical activity and opportunities to be creative and enjoy the beauty that surrounds us” said Board Chair, Pamela Blackstock. Blackstock noted “there are few artists who have shared their gift as generously as Pieter, and our citizens and communities continue to benefit from these gifts”.
Examples of Doef’s contribution include his career in art therapy at the Rideau Regional Centre, art classes in local communities, his works on public display in Smiths Falls (Centennial Park) and Perth, and as a founding member of the Merrickville Artists Guild. For the past twelve years Pieter has generously loaned artworks to the Merrickville District Community Health Centre which provides warmth and an important bright spot for all to share. His work with Child Haven International has helped raise a significant amount of money for women and children in need, living in India. Doef has had solo exhibitions from British Columbia to Quebec and continues to create new works of art. To quote Pieter, “I have no time to retire; there are still hundreds of projects and avenues to explore.”
Mr. Doef will be receiving his honour with many of his family and friends present on Tuesday June 26th at the Merrickville Community Centre, Read Street, Merrickville. The public are welcome and Pieter hopes to see many of his former art students and artist friends at the event. The RCHS Annual General Meeting commences at 7 p.m. and at 7.45 p.m. Pieter will receive his honour. A reception with refreshments will follow. Everyone is welcome.
